It's actually just the opposite. Les is thinking about the 4th quarter when he calls all of those dive plays in the first half. He wants' to wear down defenses. About 80% of the time it works, sometimes it doesn't.

It's the FANS that can't think past the next play. The fans don't even seem to understand how to set up play action.

Boom. It is the same as a boxer that is an inside fighter. He will never be the guy that gets the flashy quick knockout punch to the head in the first round. He just keeps working the body in the early rounds and by the late rounds he can knock the guy down.
