We will go shoot several this week. We will get 9mm in both, too.
It's all about feel for her. We handled several and we are down to a handful. The leaders in the clubhouse are the M&P and the Sig.

Two excellent choices! But I have a question.
Do you plan on carrying these or are they strictly to stay home? If they are only for the house I see no reason not to get the full sized versions of each. You'll get a larger mag and the extra weight will make them easier to shoot.
If you plan on carrying them, know they are a bit thick but can still be carried comfortably in the waistband. I carry an M&P9c and love it. I can't even remember the last time it malfunctioned.
But if you want a really thin concealed gun I'd recommend the Shield. Then again, if you want them to possibly use at home too, the full sized mags will fit in the compact versions.
EDIT: Forgot to say I agree with others on the cartridge - go with 9mm.
