Players will soon be able to trade Pokemon in Pokemon Go. Niantic Labs CEO John Hanke confirmed at today's Pokemon Go Panel at SDCC that players would be able to trade Pokemon in a future update, adding a classic feature to the mobile Pokemon game. The game will be released in a future update, after Hanke jokingly ensures "the servers stay up."

Trading has always been part of the Pokemon franchise, dating all the way back to Pokemon Red and Blue. Iconic Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto suggested that the games be split into two versions, each with its own set of Pokemon, to encourage trading between games.

Trading was also part of the Pokemon Go beta test, although it was limited to local trading only. Players in the beta could search for prospective trading partners nearby and basically solicit them for a trade, with responses coming in the form of yes or no answers. It's unknown if the final version will be limited to local training only, or if there will be a way to trade via the Internet.

John Hanke had previously confirmed that trading would be added to Pokemon Go, calling the system a "core element" to the game. Trading would also provide a way for players to obtain allegedly region locked Pokemon like Kangaskhan and Farfetch'd without having to travel all the way to Asia or Australia.
