My nephew's birthday is Oct 1, the day after the cutoff. His parents held him back to the next year, no pushback from the school. Another kid in his class, a girl, had the same birthday and her parents did the same thing. Both just finished 8th grade and doing great. Both tallest in the class instead of shortest, both making straight A's and both socially well-adjusted. I wouldn't hold a kid back if they're already one of the oldest in the class, but if it's borderline, waiting has a lot of advantages. And I wouldn't make them repeat a grade, it's better to just wait a year to start school.

My brother graduated HS at a young 17, and it wasn't an issue until he got to college, where he struggled the first year due to immaturity.

We didn't even have kindergarten. I started 1st grade at age 5 with a December birthday. Kicked arse all the way through school with no problem.

I would have been pissed off if my parents had held me out another year. Being stuck in high school and knowing I could have already graduated would suck hard.
