The "National Personnel Records Center",9700 Page Ave. in St. Louis, Mo. 63132-5100 maintains the records for prior servicemen. We wrote them for my wife's dad who was a marine in WWII and got copies of his basic training records, conduct records, and locations where he fought. They even sent copies of his pay records. You could write them and ask just what is needed to locate the info on certain individuals.

You got lucky. The fire of 1971 destroyed a s-ton of WWII vet's records, including my grandfather's. I got a letter back from them stating most of his were nearly unreadable

You can get just about any info you want if it's been 62 years or more (like WWII service members). If it's been less than 62 years then you only have access to very limited info unless you are the next-of-kin.
