Correct forum because we have our own franchise QB to sign in the next year. This sets the market going forward.
Luck's contract will cost the Colts approximately 13% of the teams overall cap space (approx $20 of $155 Mil total). This is nothing considering they will be contenders for the next five years guaranteed.
NFL formula is simple but very hard to put in practice. 1) Find a QB. 2) Build team around QB.
Of course there is the argument that you pay professional sports players for what they are going to do not what they have done. I would put forward this applies to all positions in all sports except NFL QBs.
Plenty of examples:
-The Browns have had more top picks than anyone in the NFL over the past few years. They haven't found a QB and look how that's working for them.
-Same for Jags
-Look how much the Texans just paid for an unproven QB. Desperate for a QB.
-Compare the Cardinals record with/without Carson Palmer. Great team but w/out a QB they are a fringe playoff team.
-same argument for Jets, Bills, Texans. Great D but no QB.
-How did the Cowboys do last year without Romo?
-Look at what the Redskins gave away to draft Griffin and Eagles to draft Carson Wentz
In the NBA you can not win a championship without multiple star players. In the MODERN NFL you can not win a Superbowl without a QB, even with an elite roster.

Manning was far from elite last year. He wasn't even average. They could have won with David Carr playing QB.
Oh, and Bortles is not garbage, so don't discount him (you referenced Jville).
