Grayton is probably the most laid back but least kid friendly

I totally disagree. Grayton is far from the main road. It doesn't have resort-like amenities, but it has a small town feel. You can rent a house with a backyard and a porch swing. The thing that makes Grayton so kid-friendly, is that everything is walkable, and the beach is easily accessed from the town - no dunes to walk up and over. Also, Western Lake is right there and there is an area of the lake right where it goes up closes to the gulf that has some beach sand that is perfect for small kids (especially if the surf is to high for small kids).

There are some reasonably priced cottages on Cottage St in Grayton that are great for small families and there is a neighborhood pool, as well.
