We haven't had to deal with the situation, obviously, but I suspect that we currently have the technology to prevent it from happening. Will be a lot easier/cheaper once we have a space elevator.
The solution that I've seen simply involves sending a really heavy object to intercept with the asteroid and follow it towards Earth. The gravity of the man-made object would be used to draw the asteroid off of it's path.

Not necessarily. We wouldn't be aware of a long period comet on a path to hit earth very far in advance
