Or genetics...
Yeah, a lean basketball player expending as many calories as he does on a daily basis was able to add 20 lbs of lean mass in less than three months...
Reasonable muscle gains for beginners or novice lifters

According to Aragon, advanced trainees near their genetic potential are lucky to gain 0.25% to 0.5% of their total body weight gain as fat-free muscle per month. That makes the 10-pound-gain claims of already ripped celebrities seem outrageous, right?
In my opinion, it's rare to see a natural bodybuilder or fitness enthusiast close to their genetic muscular potential gain more than 2-3 pounds of lean muscle in a year. This is why it's an accomplishment when experienced bodybuilders manage to gain 7-10 pounds of fat-free muscle in a year.
Provided that they follow a sensible, structured diet and training program, a 150-pound beginner fitness enthusiast in Aragon's model can potentially gain 18-27 pounds of lean muscle per year. A 170-pound intermediate fitness enthusiast can potentially gain 10-15 pounds of muscle.

Ben Simmons size according to LSU roster
0.5% of Simmons' bodyweight would equate to approximately 1.5 lbs of muscle or lean body mass he could potentially gain each month.
Not even a world-class bodybuilder on every anabolic steroid and growth hormone imaginable could gain 20 lbs of muscle in that time frame. The 76ers, their sources, or whoever is claiming Simmons gained 20 lbs of muscle, not 20 lbs of mass mind you, are undeniably wrong.

I think the person from the 76ers commenting confused mass with muscle. Or said muscle since, if he kept his lean stature, it looked like 20 lbs of muscle in a nonchalant kind of way.
I have no doubt that with a more relaxed supplement protocol for the NBA vs. NCAA he could probably put it on quick with a nutritionist and a personal S&C coach.
