It had everything to do with race, which was one of the main points and themes of the documentary. OJ was colorless when it benefited him, and he was black when it really benefited him.

Yes and No.

Race was used as a defense strategy by his team of highly paid, attention seeking, defense attorneys. But that was only an option because he had the money to buy those guys. It takes a combination of money, bamboozling lawyers, and jury selection to create the possibility of a defense of being black while prosecuted by whites to work.

I believe I made the point about him not really identifying primary as a black person at any point prior to needing that in his trial. His best friend after all was the previously straight Bruce Jenner.
