My two cents:
He's getting up there in age and he had a knee replacement. He's had to work out hard in his life to be skinny and in shape, he is not naturally that size.
My guess is with the knee replacement and his age, he can no longer keep up that exercise routine and he's put on a few pounds, and he's probably embarrassed to show his face.
Poor guy. I think everyone would understand.

Yep, I agree. I bet he's a big ole fatty now and is too insecure about it to go outside.
