So you can name 25 country singers you'd put ahead of him? He just about single handedly adequate country music main stream. Whether that is good or bad with all of the bro country nowadays that is one hell of an accomplishment.

Popularity does not equal quality.

yes.- I'll try to stay in order from top to bottom(but really not in order).#1 Hank Williams,2 Jimmy Rodgers,3 Merle Haggard,4 Johnny Cash,5 Dwight Yoakam,6Patsy Cline.7 Loretta Lynne,8 George Jones,9 Kieth Whitley,10 Vern Godsdin,11 Willie Nelson,12 Waylon Jennings,13Johnny Paycheck,14 Hank jr.,15 Vince Gill,16 Marty Robbins,17 David Allen Coe,18 Ricky Skaggs,19 Allison Krauss,20 Elvis Presley,21 Glenn Campbell,22George Straight,23 Bill Monroe,24 Ralph Stanley,35 Earnest Tubb,26 Roy Acuff,27 Randy Travis.. inject Buck Owens in top 10 someplace, along with Johnny Horton. Bellamy Brothers had a good run,in the 80s with a lot of hits, almost forgotten now,but you can still hear their influence...Amazing Rhythm Aces..you could even hear the influence in Dire Strait's stuff, and that came full circle, when Knopfler started producing country acts.
Obviously, I wasn't able to keep my list in order,in level of importance to the real genre,it would have taken too much editing. For permanent lasting influence, I put all of these ahead of Garth Brooks though.Probably left some out too.
