I've said this before and will again. If you don't know how to swim, stay the frick out of the water. There's no shame in it.
I feel particularly bad for the guy who turned back, he was apparently also untrained and didn't know that most drowning victims do not splash around like they are in trouble, they are flailing very vigorously *below* the water but you won't know it unless you know what to look for.
Based on what I read from the reports he should have been an easy rescue for someone with even basic training. Very sad and avoidable.
