If he had dodged the draft, he would have run off to a foreign country, or finagled some kind of deferment, either of which would have been easy to do with his resources and connections. Instead, he refused induction and accepted the consequences, which were significant, both personally and professionally. And other than that, he's lived a pretty exemplary life.

While I didn't agree with his refusal to enter the draft...he would never have been put into battle, he would have been used in an enlistment capacity...he is still the most iconic figure of the baby boom generation.
Seeing him light the flame at the '96 Atlanta Olympics made me cry like a baby.
I truly pray he doesn't suffer if this is the end. When he passes a lot of my generation will feel a huge loss.
