Went there for a wedding last weekend and I lived in Avondale two years ago while finishing an internship in town.

I'd check out Avondale. In the area: Cahaba Brewery, Fancy's on 5th, Saw's, Avondale Brewing (crawfish food truck out back), Post Office Pies (pizza place).

Downtown: Good People Brewing, Region's Park, Bamboo on 2nd, El Barrio (1+ hour wait on Friday/Saturday)

Coffee: Revelator, Red Cat, Urban Standard (in that order)

Southside: J Clyde, Mellow Mushroom (going to get judged here - but it's the only MM I've ever enjoyed eating at. It's unique). Makario's for cheap Mediterranean eats. Rojo's (more in the Highlands area)

Don't let anyone refer you to Uptown. It's a little development north of the interstate that, from the little I've seen, is just chain restaurants.

If it's a weekend, check out the farmer's market at pepper place.

Agree on Avondale. Also on the same block as Avondale Brew/ Saws/ POP is The Wooden Goat which has pretty good southeast asian fusion. Oh, and Wasabi Juans if you want a sushi burrito, never eaten there before though. And a block away is Rowe's which is a pretty decent restaurant in an old service station. Saturn coffee bar is also across the street and seems like a neat place.

Not far away is Trimtab Brewery, which probably has the other breweries beat in terms of quality.

Yea, I agree with this. Its not a bad place, just not worth going to. It seems like it just caters to folks who are going to events at the BJCC.
