They were years ahead of their time. A sensational admixture of rock and roll, jazz and proto-funk.

The Funky Meters played Athens Georgia Theatre in 96. I worked there at the time and out of all of the bands and performers I got to meet, they were the musicians I was most excited to mingle with. When their bus showed up at about 5pm for a 9pm show, I was one of only 3 employees there. I went and unlocked the stage side door and the first guy to walk in was Art Neville. I was in charge of setting up the backstage room with food and drinks and got to spend several hours just hanging out around them. Didn't talk as much with the band members as I did with other bands who came through because ....what the hell do you small talk with Art Neville and GP Jr. about? They put off a coolness vibe that makes you feel awkward. I never had that issue with other bands like DMB or Colonel Bruce, etc..
