On a torsion axle, there is a lot of downward movement of the wheels as the weight is removed. Pretty sure that's why it was such a close call for me.

Ahhhh. I'd never seen a setup like that. But now I see why it'd be difficult to get a jack under what should be the lowest point of the trailer. In a torsion setup the axle is rigid mounted to the frame much higher than a typical spring mounted axle...

I stand corrected on my previous post.

Easiest and cheapest thing I could see doing in the OPs case is just throw a cut section of 4x4 or 6x6 in the truck whenever towing the boat.
