Never been there myself, but a couple of guys stationed with me in OK shared some less-than-savory racial experiences from their time up there.

I think this was when she was teaching. I don't think she was there during her army brat days...

The first story was that she was at a restaurant in Boise, and one of her colleagues was married to an Asian woman. The waitress went to the table and flat out told them they would gladly serve everyone but the "chink".
This was in the 1990s too.
There were several other stories that came after. We were appalled.
It was funny when she told all these stories and one of the Prog POSs made the profound statement: "This sounds like when Republicans passed Jim Crow laws in the south"!
Although I was a staunch Dem voter at the time, I did take pleasure in letting the Prog POSs in the class know they weren't as smart as they thought they were.

Remember Western Idaho was the National HQ of Aryan Nations for a while.
