It really wasn't known until the late 70s that moderate drinking while pregnant was also bad for the fetus. Going through 2 bottles of wine a week wasn't thought of as even slightly odd for a pregnant woman before the 80s.

That reminds me...my mom told me that in 1980 they still couldn't determine the sex of a baby. Like there was no such thing as announcing "we're having a girl!!"
