Seriously you are supposed to take your plates off of your car/truck when you trade it in at a dealership?
I have never done this nor had any problems after, but I usually buy my cars from friends that work at dealerships.

Yes.
Every car I have ever sold I personally take the plate off.
Not being an arse, but to avoid your scenario
