They're pulling a 90s Microsoft and jumping into whatever anyone else is turning a profit on.

It's hard not to see it that way. But at this point we're talking about Google/FB/Apple/Amazon, in no particular order. They're each fighting a three-front war with each other-simultaneously-to win eyeballs and make $.

Apple's dipped into services whole-heartedly with Apple Music, iCloud, CDN's, original content/Apple TV, iMessage, etc.

Amazon's going after Google via a YouTube derivative, Spotify & Apple Music with Amazon Music, Google & Apple with AWS helping to provide unlimited picture hosting through Amazon Prime Photo, Netflix, Apple and (according to folks here) YouTube with Amazon Prime Video.

Google's going after Amazon with the Google Home, Facebook with the Allo, Apple/iOS with Android, Amazon with YouTube Red and the Allo.

Facebook's shifted a ton of money away from Google via advertising with its ability to push eyeballs to news and online publishing content and FB Messenger & Instagram are threats to G-Mail, iMessage, etc.

Hell Amazon and Bezos is competing with Elon Musk on reusable rocketry. Apple & Google are competing with him for autonomous driving. Google & Apple are fighting with PayPal using their own online wallet services.

It's crazy to think about all of this...but its a great time to be a consumer.
