He also averaged nearly 15 trips to the dealership per year.

I'm sure you could keep most cars running that long if you have the car serviced at a dealership once every 3.5 weeks.

That's an average of about 350 miles a day, 7 days a week for 8 years. Am I the only one who thought of Al Bundy?

I saw this on Jalopnik the other day, and am definitely interested in the results of the study. Toyota did a similar study a few years ago when they gave a new Tundra to a West Texas cattle rancher. He put 100,000 hard miles on it and they took it back at that time, tore it apart and studied everything. Even things like the hydrocarbon filter and water filter were still extremely clean and it was in great condition.

I've been truck shopping for the last two years or so, and reliability and durability is what put lead me to buy a Tundra.

I'd always thought I'd wind up in a Ford -- my dad has had two King Ranches -- but I couldn't get past the Tundra reliability and bought a '16 Crewmax SR5.

If you left your car running at 15MPH 24/7 for 7 straight years, you would hit this guys mark.....that's crazy.

. Thanks, in part, to 117 dealership visits, Sheppard was able to keep the original engine, transmission and paint job intact despite averaging 125,000 miles per year.

Regular business trips to North Dakota, Wyoming and Virginia helped him rack up miles.

As if simply reaching 1 million miles didn't provide Toyota with enough good press, Sheppard had this to say about his 15th Tundra:

“I believed [reaching a million miles] wouldn’t be a problem,” Sheppard told Toyota's press team. “These trucks are safe and dependable. I think, if you see a Toyota on the side of the road, it might be a scam because they just don’t break down very often.”

That comes out to 125,000 miles per year, or driving nearly 5 hours every day for seven years at 70mph. Something doesn't seem legit

...to understand why planned obsolescence isn't succeeding at the Tundra plant.

Guy in New Iberia ran over 1,000,000 miles 10 years ago in one of those ubiquitous white Chevy pickups. He was probably pulled over and questioned about being a serial killer a few times in 2001-2002.
