reading has become dominated by female-oriented literature. more fiction and more fiction geared to girls. there is a massive gender reading gap because of this

I know when I was growing up, reading books in your spare time was viewed as "nerdy" behavior, which was not viewed as masculine behavior

so blame this the anti intellectual views from the everyday, hard working masculine male

"roughhousing" and other "male" activities have been regulated out of schools. the energy is seen either a sign of ADHD or aggression, so the male students get medicated or threatened with punishment if they act in their normal behavior. this leads to frustration or over-medication and it's leading to a lot of males "checking out" by puberty.

why were boys so much more advanced at reading in the "old world" view where they were seen as nerdy for reading?

they've been socialized to see reading as not being "nerdy" and are falling behind

well i imagine that in the areas where this policy is that severe, the regular folks are going to have the same values

My school did programs. Log so many hours, get braves tickets. Log the most hours in your class by end of school year, free tickets to six flags.

Sorry but going to six flags and braves games isn't nerdy.

Find ways to get the kids engaged. Stop turning them into drugged up robots.
