Driving in from Slidell, go south on LA 1 and hit Nottoway first, then Oak Alley, skip Laura, cross the Mississippi River, turn left on the other side, walk the grounds of the Convent, then finish up at Houmas House.
For Dinner:
Houmas House $$$$ - reservations recommended
The Cabin Restaurant $$$ - constructed from old slave quarters. Hwy 44 at Hwy 22
Hymel's - $$(my favorite) Hole in the wall local joint with great food. It's on River Road just before the Sunshine Bridge.

Do not eat at the cabin if your expecting good food or service, only eat there if you just want to check the place out on the inside. It is a pretty neat place and touristy but much better food in the area. I used to live right next to the cabin and gave it a chance a few times over the years and it never got better.
My recommendation would be Grapevine Café and Gallery in downtown Donaldsonville.

I recommend the crawfish cornbread appetizer, the crawfish stuffed chicken breast or the pork tenderloin ribeye entrée, and the white chocolate bread pudding for dessert.
Hymel's as mentioned before, is also a great spot.

Do what shexter suggested with the grapevine or houmas house lunch instead of the cabin
