Redneck is absolutely an offensive term. Like I mentioned earlier, I was under the impression that coonass was sort of a compliment. I was dumbfounded and at a loss for words when she said that it was an insult. I stumbled through the apology, but was still confused.

You apologized? You should have told her to "quit eavesdropping on others' conversations, weirdo." Don't be a pussy. It's not offensive. I believe there used to be mock license plates with the butthole of a raccoon facing the viewer that said "Registered Coonass."
