I'm on the Compensation side of the house, but our recruiters do the initial interview, then recommend qualified applicants to the hiring managers. At that point, the school you attended plays a huge part in whether you're hired or not.

The first part is usually true at most companies.

The HR people will talk to you on a first round interview (usually over the phone) to filter out who is and who isn't a total dumbass.

I had one of these today as a matter of fact. Applied for this job two three days ago, 2 days later, I get an email setting me up for a phone interview the very next day.

Then, the HR rep will submit the list of viable candidates to a hiring manager who then will get the 2nd round of interviews lined up for scheduling.

More often than not, there will be. 3rd round of interviews where you will most likely interview with your direct supervisor and you are basically the man they want for the job. you will have to be a colossal screw-up to not get it at that point.

To answer your other question, I actually was talking to a guy in a related field with my job and he told me about this opening I applied for. So, word of mouth and experience are two HUGE factors in getting noticed and getting an interview.

Funny, same here except I didn't get the courteous email to set up a phone interview. A job I applied for yesterday actually, but had applied for other similar positions in the company a few weeks ago. About 11:00 this morning I get a call from a St. Louis, MO number and we talked for about 20 mins and had the normal, "tell me about a time when...." And "how much would you require in salary for this position" Questions, then proceeded to schedule me for an in person interview in 2 weeks(out of state job so we had to schedule a day in which I could request the vacation day off from my current employer).
