Same reason why a 7th round pic out of hofstra became the all time receiver for the saints. The draft is a crap shoot at best
It's not necessarily that the draft is a crap shoot. Rather, it's all a matter of being in the right place on the right team. I doubt anyone ever knows of Marcus Colston if he never played for the Saints. He was just fortunate to be drafted by a team with a creative HC, a HOF QB and no megastar WR at the time. Right place, Right time.
Claiborne might have been an all-pro if he played for someone with a front 7 like Carolina/Denver last season or the 49ers from a few years back. Maybe more than any other sport, it takes good teammates to make a great NFL player.

What Brees WAS, was a guy trying to get re-established in the game after an injury, an moving to a new team. Payton sought to make him as comfortable as he could, and Brees' security blanket in San Diego was Antonio Gates, a big "TE" who was really a basketball power forward posting up for position against smaller players. Colston was the early Saints equivalent, Graham was the later one.
