I didn't think this single was very slow. Once the drums kick in midway through its got a Gorilla Manor feel to it. Reminds me of the energy on Sun Hands.
Also, no doubt Hummingbird was a lot slower and a bit darker than Gorilla Manor, but I'm not quite ready to say that that's the "direction" the band is headed in. I think it was just a reflection on where they were at that point in their lives. Some members of the group had some personal issues, family members passing away, etc. That comes out in the album.
And, FWIW, if you watch them play songs from Hummingbird live, they do a great job of bringing some added energy to the slower records. Seeing them live/watching some of their sets online really helped me get behind that album more.
I thought both albums were fantastic in their own right. Excited to see where this one goes.
