The 2 things you look at on a compound bow are draw length (mentioned above) and draw weight which is how difficult it will be to pull back.
If you buy one off of Ebay make sure it has an adjustable draw length for sure... it will usually be something like 25"-30" or if you purchase a newer youth bow that is adjustable it will be approximately 17"-30"
There aren't as many out there with adjustable weights... but for an 18 year old just starting I think this is an important aspect. He will likely get stronger as he starts shooting and will want to increase the speed of his arrow at some point.
Look for a used Mission Menace, Mission Craze, or Diamond Infinite Edge... all are excellent adjustable draw length and draw weight.
Remember if you purchase a "bare bow" that you will need accessories like a rest and sight. Stabilizer and quiver would be optional.
