His "empire" was basically an earlier version of Genghis Khan. Conquer new lands to ravish the lands and ladies, leave older conquests behind cowering in fear to pay taxes long enough for the next generation but nothing beyond that, he was basically pushing on and just leaving behind bastard children to deal with the consequences.

A very fragile situation. Bear in mind that he died around 30 or so. It was a very different world back then.

They were basically the mobile terrorists of that time.
