It all begins at infancy (usually).

From what I've seen at work...this isn't shocking at all. I see too many lazy parents(remember that I work in a hospital that serves mostly very poor and uneducated people) that just shut up their crying baby every time....by sticking a bottle in their mouth. Overfeeding babies and not thinking anything is wrong with that. Fat baby becomes a fat toddler. Lazy parents again...toddler throws a tantrum...give them sweets to shut them up. Put soda or juice in their sippy cup cause they won't drink anything else. Throws another tantrum for dinner...fast food to shut them up. Unhealthy eating habits have been established early on and food is used to placate the child.

And yet people wonder why there are so many obese children?

Bingo nurse- lazy parents. dont realize, or dont care, that a newborne's stomach is the size of a golf ball. Just feed it to shut it up. then feed them solids as fast as they can. and dont breastfeed. it all leads to obesity. Its a complicated mess. I do not believe its the government responsibility to fix it, but educating the uneducated does seem to help.

The problem is getting worse. The only figures that say they are leveling off are only doing so to make michele obama feel she has done something with her life.
