Mercury is a great call.

Except this violates your "no bands" caveat.

Certainly a talent worthy of consideration, but Mercury's relevant work was all with Queen.

The same could be true of Hendrix with The Jimi Hendrix Experience and the Band of Gypsies.

McCartney had a solid solo career, as well as with Wings, but, likewise, everything he did to warrant inclusion on this hypothetical monument was with "The Beatles."

For "solo" artists within the Rock/Pop/Soul/R&B/Blues era - from ~1950 to the present:

Chuck Berry

Elvis Presley

Ray Charles (and, no the "Raelettes" don't count)

Aretha Franklin

Hon Mention:

Prince (not sure who I'd bump from the Top 4 to include him - maybe Chuck Berry - but he is close, and so are the following -)

Buddy Holly

Little Richard

Jerry Lee Lewis

Johnny Cash

Stevie Wonder

Michael Jackson
