If you want to limit it to the biggest names in American music, then my list would be something like:
John Phillip Souza
Louis Armstrong
George Gershwin
Elvis Presley
Prince, Michael Jackson and Bob Dylan don't come close to having the cultural impact to justify ignoring pre-rock n' roll musicians. I'd include someone representing blues, country, bluegrass, Broadway, opera, spiritual/gospel and folk before I'd select multiple rock artists.

Arguments can be made for everyone else, even though Prince is definitely on the short list along with Dylan, James Brown...and Stephen fricking Foster and Frederic fricking Chopin.
