If you wait till the fall when companies start releasing new models, you can get the premium brands for discount prices. I picked up my Predator MX new for under $800. It can be done, just have to be patient.
I still wouldn't buy an Ascend though. I'm sure for some people they work great, but the % of bad reviews for them is higher than almost all other brands. Would much rather spend a little more on a perception pro or get a used native, WS, jackson, old town, etc...
