I don't get why they couldn't have just stuck with an Asian (or a Hispanic from the later shows) as Rita.
Nobody is going be like "Well, I didn't have any interest in Power Rangers but then I heard Elizabeth Banks is in it and now I can't wait!"

Same reason Scarlett Johansson is the lead in Ghost in the Shell, its about foreign sales and pre-selling a movie. studios dont give a frick about audiences perceptions. its about the market perception. Max Landis also talked about this exact topic recently.
eta: to better put it into perspective, all the rangers are basically no names. Banks was just in the Hunger Games which had HUGE foreign success. They needed a name for this role for their foreign buyers.
