biggest differnece is that you can still use an old OS/device without the updates/packages...unless they are forced upon you. apple (and i presume other companies, but not all) forces their phones to upgrade, so it's more like forced, rather than planned, obsolescence

They don't force the upgrades, they just nag you about it until you do.

they dont magically quit working one day.
you can use your phone as long as the cell carrier supports it.
you can still use XP if you want, you just cant use MSE or IE11 with it or get security updates. it isnt forced.

Nobody is forcing you to upgrade. I know a guy that still rocks an iPhone 3GS.

Other manufacturers are more than welcome to support a phone for 10 years if they want to.

Meanwhile technology continues to advance every year.
