Fort St. Philip - interested in books

Recently visited Fort St. Philip down in the Louisiana bayou. Unlike Fort Jackson, no one is taking care of the property. I would like to find some books or articles or anything that can show me what the fort looked like during the Civil War, Spanish-American War or when it was a training post during WWI.
I can't imagine what it was like to construct something like that deep in the swamp in the 1800s. Worthwhile visit. Thanks.

It is privately owned by a quite fractious group, thus no agreement on use, care taking, or its future. It sadly seems destined to crumble. What were you doing out there, just checking it out?
