New York Jets left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson, a former Pro Bowl player known for his remarkable durability, is retiring Friday at age 32, league sources told ESPN.com. Ferguson, the fourth overall pick in 2006, has no known injury issues. Not only did he play every game in 10 seasons -- 167 consecutive starts, including playoffs -- but he also never missed a practice and never appeared on an injury report. In fact, Ferguson missed only one offensive snap in 10 years, and that was a trick play when the entire offensive line was removed.

quote:

With a $14.1 million cap charge for 2016, Ferguson was an obvious candidate for a pay cut. The Jets have less than $1 million in cap room and still hope to re-sign quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. Ferguson was approached last week in the weight room by general manager Mike Maccagnan, who broached the possibility of a pay cut. The conversation was brief. The Jets and Ferguson's agent never engaged in formal discussions about reworking his contract, sources said. By then, Ferguson already was considering retirement, according to sources.

06 was the first year I really got into the draft. Crazy that it's been 10 years since then

That is legendary durability for any player, much less a lineman. I didn't realize he was in the league 10 years.

Good for him. Played in the league for 10 years, made a lot of money, left on his own terms without a debilitating injury.

Looking back I'd be pissed at whoever came up with that trick play

That is undoubtedly the best sports factoid I have heard in a while.

Congrats to him on a successful career and always staying healthy.

Damn I didn't realize he's been playing for that long. Dude had an amazing career being able to play like that at o-line.

He's made an arse-ton of money and retiring in good health with a nice NFL pension for life.

Good for him. Great career.

That stat about missing 1 snap in 10 years is absurd, especially considering his position.

Pretty much th best possible outcome at the end of an NFL career. He has education, money, and his health.

I remember hearing his name no less than 1,000 times around the draft that year.
