I'm not an avid book reader, but I have had an Ipad Air 2 for years and love it. Bought my kids a kindle fire last year and I hated it just from setting it up. I didn't find it nearly as simple as an Ipad. If you want smaller, just get the Ipad mini. I can't speak for reading experience on either machine.

I believe we've all been talking about e-readers, not tablets, which is what the Kindle Fire is.
