I would advise a Lyman GPR in 54 cal percussion twist for patched roundball.

First gun I ever bought with my own money was a great plains rifle. To save money I bought the unfinished gun kit version. That was a mistake. I was so anxious to shoot the thing I did an absolute shite job of finishing it.

Shot one deer with it at 90yrd with iron sites. Absolute zero blood trail. Was conviced I'd missed it after 2hrs of searching but on way back I glanced down in creek and there she was. Good shot but I guess the round lead ball doesn't have very good expansion properties..

Doubt I will ever take it deer hunting again--its a pita to clean.
