One thing I've learned to do is make extremely long layovers, whether traveling for business or not. I have missed so many flights with only 1 hour layover. Mostly because my home airport, SHV, treats departure times as a light suggestion.

That way, when we arrive at DFW, I don't stab the guy who runs up from row 22 as soon as the seat belt sign gets turned off.

As to the OP: In Austin a few months ago I saw a guy who went to check in when 1st class was called. The ticket agent pointed out that he was not first class, but group 3. Every successive call to board he answered. About the 3rd time she asked if he spoke English. He did, he was just that stupid.

Another time my wife was flying from SHV. She overheard an old man and a young redneck ask each other why they had to take off their shoes in the security line. I guess neither had flown in the past 15 years.

For the first time ever I had a flight leave 15 minutes early, I guess everyone had checked in.

I haven't missed a connection in a long time :knockonwood:, and I generally get between 50 minutes to 1.5 hours in Atlanta.

ETA: To the OP, overhead space is the only reason. I usually check a bag and bring my laptop with me on the plane and put it under the seat. Unless I'm upgraded, I'm always waiting to board the plane last. It makes no sense to get on there in a hurry for me when everyone else is. I'll take my damn time.
