Because they wrote the code as a hip way to show the power of self-altering AI. However, they underestimated the collective computing power of anonymous trolls to hack (not directly, but at least have enough of an effect to get their desired result) their learning program and have the PR nightmare/hilarious result for internet users who've become cynical about anything related to social media that happened.
