I work with someone who was on that Tiny House Nation show. They did it to save money and also because they wanted to take a few years off of work and travel. Her boyfriend actually got sent overseas for work, so now they're over in Europe for 9 months and renting their tiny house out. They aren't SJW's, hipsters, etc. One is an aerospace engineer and the other is in aerospace IT.
I couldn't do it, but they seemed to like it. The housing prices in my area are pretty insane though, so I could see more and more people doing this.
