Engineers were "usually" never in the field, and The Craftsmen were never in the office making "those" types of decisions.
You are spot on when you say they need each other.
as far as the money, from what i see in my particular plant, with a good bit of OT, u easier make more than most Maintenance Engineers. But Engineers make there money on 40. or just a little more with no physical labor and A/C all day.

One of the best things I did while at LSU for EE was work summers as a laborer for an instrumentation contractor. 2 summers of actually running conduit, pulling wires, and fooling with instrumentation helped out a lot when it came time to design plants as an Eng.

Exactly. I make more money than my engineering friends but I work out of town and very long hours. They work 40hrs a week, maybe(CP3 ), and get to sleep at home every night.
