My wife is a third grade teacher at a public school. She taught first grade at a private school last year.
She loves it, because she genuinely cares for the kids. If you do not have patience, or if you do not absolutely love it, it will be a miserable experience. What I can tell you is she works over 60-70 hours a week between school, events, and lesson planning. She said the kids can be a pain, but the parents are the worst.
She got a B.a in Broadcast journalism from LSU and went through the TeacherReady program.
Edit: She only makes 42k a year.
