Lewelyn was never going to get away no matter how slick or cunning he was. Chigurh was pure evil, almost a supernatural character. Like the Terminator he would never stop until the money is retrieved and all are dead. You could start a whole thread on this.
Mike was also never going to be a Lawyer, Landau's story about being a Rabbi sealed it for Damon, he knew deep down he was a poker player and it's the only thing that really ignited him.
