Had this conversation with my wife a couple of weeks ago discussing her class and we both agreed, part of what kills it, is the costuming. When you look at film like I mentioned earlier "Breakfast Club", there's a timeless element to their wardrobe. Jocks still wear their letter jackets, geeks still dress unassuming, Claire looks like she can be dropped into 2016 and no one would notice, and Bender looks like many a trouble maker. Yes, the costuming, set and the like are timeless, but so is the dialogue and what the average teenager is going through. Hughes was a master of this. Sure some of his films maybe dated like 16 and "Some Kind of Wonderful" because of the visuals, but the pulse of every young person is there.
It really is amazing the Breakfast still holds up and that's a huge piece of Hughes' legacy.
She also shows "Rebel Without a Cause" and "The Graduate" as part of her "Coming of Age" section of her course.

what are you talking about? lots of kids still wear designer suits to high school these days

Yes I agree. The clothes in Pretty in Pink are a caricature. Molly Ringwald looks a hot mess. Plus the humor is better in 16 Candles.

I've actually never seen Rebel. Sounds like a fun course though.
