Lack of defensive recognition in basketball today

Teams rarely get praised for their defense other than maybe a quick word or two. You even see it in coaching and in games, defensive importance has dropped in many people eyes. It's especially obvious in college basketball when all these "great" teams with elite talent play no defense and then people are amazed every year with how good teams like UCONN and West Virginia are without elite scorers.
I swear half the coaches in the NBA and college have forgotten how important defense is. Hell the Warriors are one of the best defensive teams in the league yet you rarely get more than a sentence or two talking about it

Ummm no. The only people who don't think much about defense is a casual fan.
Players, coaches, and people who regularly follow basketball know how important defense is.

Meh, Blatt stressed defense too much with the Cavs. I think we are transitioning to a phase where a better offense will beat out a better defense. A product of the Warrior's fast pace offense, illegal screens, and hitting 3's normal teams can't make. The Cavs had a great defense last year with an offense that complimented it and still failed to prevail against the Warriors offense.

i was talking about this saturday night with one of my friends
with the changes in defenses and move towards efficiency, teams are "giving up" on some things in order to gain on the other end. i read an article last week, i think it was about the warriors, and it was discussing how they don't overspend energy on offensive rebounds so that they get back on defense and slow fast breaks
my friend was talking about how they aren't those gritty, hardworking defensive teams like the mid-00s pistons. i brought up the grizz, who are very similar. they maxed out in the playoffs every year b/c their offense just wasn't good enough and could not become good enough. the grizz are very defensive and built around big men and a pure point guard. that style just doesn't work against teams built for the more modern game
defense is moving more towards having a rim protector and a bunch of long, athletic guys whose goal is to get steals and start transition. defense today has a ton of movement and lots of hedging/flexing for that reason.

JHarden agrees with this.

That's why they are so good.
They are the best on both sides of the ball.
