I'm looking for something ~$300. I'd like to go even cheaper. It will be used to surf the web and download music, so viruses will claim it eventually. Guy at BestBuy the other day said don't go any lower than a core i-3 processor, though. Is this true?

BestBuy may not take up floor space with lower models than that, I dont know. WalMart has plenty of cheap arse laptops - AMD A4s and E-1s and Intel Pentiums and Celerons- that are basically throw aways.
I think you would be better off getting a refurb unit than buying brand new. Check refurbs on WalMarts site.
