Example: How do we handle the whole issues of slavery? Easy, have a token black guy make an appearance at the end and utter laughable dialogue (something about 'I reckon' from what i recall). Problem solved!
If you went into the Patriot thinking it was going to be a critique of early ___ then I don't know what to tell you.
Obviously they wanted Mel's character to look like a good guy (a white Southern plantation owner with free black workers? There is literally no historical precedent for that), but that's not what the movie is about. It is about the colonists fighting for their own freedom from what they saw was oppression.
Hell, it didn't come close to showing the horrors of slavery but it didn't just ignore the problem cold turkey.
FYI the real Founding Fathers struggled mightily with the obvious contradiction of fighting for freedom while simultaneously possessing slaves, I don't think it's an issue that can properly addressed in a movie that is so obviously about the war itself.
eta: I guess people can get mad because it does kind of portray itself to be more historically accurate than it really was. Same goes for Braveheart, and hell same goes for Remember the Titans. But I enjoy all 3 movies because they're good stories. Even if some of it is fictionalized I think fighting for freedom or playing together in the face of adversity is a great story. So what if the names or places or events aren't 100% accurate?

But a film can do this while remaining faithful to the actual events. While it's not about a group of people fighting for freedom, Miracle is a film about a hockey team overcoming adversity and defeating a vastly superior opponent on the ice. It stays almost completely true to the events it portrays.
The story of the American Revolution and its participants is already dramatic enough. Why make shite up for the sake of making shite up?
